Tsuga canadensis
'Abbott's Pygmy'
Possibly the smallest hemlock cultivar and also one of the smallest of all conifers. Tiny dark green leaves on a globose shaped plant. Despite its tiny size this is a tough, hardy plant only needing protection from the strong afternoon sun and, more importantly, protection from foot traffic. 1-2"per year. 1-1.5 ft. Green Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Albospica'
A lovely, open-growing hemlock, with snowy-white-tipped foliage, standing out in stark contrast against mature, dark green needles. Bright color splash for deep shade. Cultivated since 1866. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. White Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Aurea Compacta'
This dwarf is a cheerful, bright-gold with a stiff, upright habit. Also known as 'Everitt's Golden'. 3-6" per year. 4-5 ft. Yellow Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Betty Rose'
Extremely slow growing irregular shaped mounding plant with white tipped foliage. Difficult to propagate and slow to develop, qualities a conifer collector covets. 2-3" per year. 1.5-2.5 ft. White Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis 'Brandlyi' Deep green foliage with a broad pyramidal form and slow growth rate. An excellent seedling selection by J. Bradley in Walpole, Massachusetts. 4-8" per year. 3-6 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Cloud Prune'
Slow-growing, spreading type. It has a very dense habit that, in time, becomes irregularly spreading, reminiscent of Japanese `cloud pruning'. 2-3" per year. 1.5-2.5 ft. Green Spreading Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Cole's Prostrate'
A great choice for your shaded rock or native garden. 'Cole's Prostrate' grows slowly, spreading flat on the ground, softening harsh edges or cascading over walls. Whitish gnarled bark is exposed adding contrast to the soft green foliage. 3-6" per year varies w/culture. 2-5 ft. Green Prostrate Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Dawsoniana'
Upright tree, rather slow when young. Similar to a typical hemlock but with bright green, dense foliage on gracefully arching shoots. Extremely attractive foliage. 6-10" per year. 6-8 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Forest Fountain'
A lovely, small upright tree with upward arching branches giving it a fountain like appearance. Makes a nice focal point. Formerly 'Dwarf Upright'. 6-10" per year. 6-8 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Frostie'
This extremely white foliaged cultivar with thin branches provides a delicate texture contrast in the shade garden, where it does best. Winter color is blushed with pink. 3-6" per year. 4-5 ft. White Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Geneva'
An upright, open shrub with thick, ascending main branches and dark green foliage. Useful for specimen or screen planting. Named for the tree at Trinity Church Home, Geneva, New York, the former residence of the founder of Maxwell Nurseries. 6-10" per year. 6-8 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Gentsch White'
Variegated, globose shrub. Creamy-white color especially intense in fall and winter. Annual shearing advised to maintain a compact habit and more white color. Originated from Otto Gentsch, Long Island, New York. 6-10" per year. 6-8 ft. White Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Golden Splendor'
A fast-growing, golden form introduced by John Mitsch, Aurora, Oregon. Tolerates full sun and is useful as a specimen tree or sheared into a golden-foliaged hedge. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. Yellow Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Gracilis'
Low-growing, spreading form with a very regular arrangement of needles and shoots, giving this plant a nice, neat, uniform appearance. Often improperly called 'Gracilis Nana' or 'Nana Gracilis'. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Spreading Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Horsford'
Dense, squat plant with an irregular growth pattern in a miniature scale. The variation of congested to more open foliage gives this small plant a rustic charm useful in a rock garden setting. 2-3" per year. 1.5-2.5 ft. Green Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Horsford Contorted'
Twisted branches and coiled, contorted branchlets make 'Horsford Contorted' an interesting and surprisingly attractive compact plant. Sometimes found listed as 'Pig Tails', which accurately describes the curious branching pattern, will make a curious addition to the garden. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Hussi'
Very slow-growing, dark green upright with irregular habit and short, twiggy branches. Buds are prominent. Found in 1900 by John F. Huss, Hartford, Connecticut. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Jacqueline Verkade'
A small, rounded shape with tiny, medium green foliage on thin stems. Seedling selection from Verkade Nursery, Wayne, New Jersey. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis 'Jean Iseli' This treasure for the collector's garden is a slow-growing low spreader with short green needles. Its delicate texture is a result of tertiary branchlets that break bud intermittently along new growth and are only one and a half times longer than the needle. The needles on the smaller branchlets are half the size of the normal needles. 'Jean Iseli' is an Ed Woods seedling selection named in honor of Jean Iseli. 2-4" per year. 2-3 ft. Spread. Green Spreading Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Jeddeloh'
Dwarf, spreading mound with center of plant forming a unique, depressed funnel shape, often referred to as "bird's nest." Original seedling discovered by Jeddeloh Nursery in a cemetery in Germany in 1950. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Spread. Green Spreading Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Jervis'
Densely branched, broad pyramid with congested, dark green foliage. Similar to 'Hussi' but more compact. Slow, upright, irregular growth. Prominent buds, short and twiggy growth. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Kelsey's Weeping'
Differing primarily from Tsuga canadensis 'Pendula' in its asymmetrical growth habit. Secondary branches approach horizontal, spreading in various directions. From this scaffold hang the younger branches in typical pendulous form. The overall effect is of a fuller, layered weeping hemlock. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. Green Pendulous Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Lewis'
Irregular pyramid with stiff, rigid shape and beautiful, dark-green, densely-set needles. Difficult to propagate from cuttings. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Minuta'
A dense, bun-shaped, rare and aristocratic addition to your garden. One of the slowest growing hemlocks, similar to 'Jervis'. Discovered by Daniel M. St. George of Charlotte, Vermont, from a group of seedlings. Unfortunately the parent tree was destroyed by grazing cattle. 2-3" per year. 1.5-2.5 ft. Green Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis 'Moon Frost' Bright white new growth, reminiscent of the glow of frost on a moonlit night. Older green inner foliage retains light tones giving the plant an overall whitish appearance. In winter, the white foliage is blushed with pink. A reliable small dwarf conifer. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Nana'
A dwarf globose hemlock, distinctive for the cinnamon color on new twigs and buds. This contrasts nicely with the dark green needles and occasional views of glaucous stomatal bands. Best if planted in partial shade. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Globose Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'New Gold'
Bright, yellow-gold new growth contrasts with the previous year's dark green. Similar habit to the species, eventually becoming a large tree. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. Green / Yellow Spring Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Pendula'
The popular weeping form of Canadian hemlock is a widely known and used plant, staked and trained to develop height and character. Branches are pendulous, forming a thick exterior `shell' of foliage that covers an interior scaffold. More than 12" per year varies w/culture. Variable. Green Pendulous Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Sherwood Compacta'
Low-spreading dwarf with layered branches. A smaller version of 'Gracilis'. A seedling selection of Andy Sherwood, Portland, Oregon. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Green Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Slenderella'
A tall narrow tree with long slender branches clothed with very short needles. An excellent backdrop or screening plant for limited space situatons. 6-10" per year. 6-8 ft. Green Upright Narrow Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
Tsuga canadensis
'Stockman's Dwarf'
'Stockman's Dwarf' is a unique miniature version of Tsuga canadensis 'Nana Gracilis'. The compact nest-type layered foliage is reminiscent of clouds. Tsuga canadensis
'Summer Snow'
The new ivory-white growth contrasts brilliantly with the dark green on this elegant and graceful tree. For a bright color splash, plant in deep shade or under other trees. Prune or shear annually to encourage good color and form. Originally propagated by John Mitsch, Aurora, Oregon. 6-l2" per year. 5-10 ft. White Upright Broad Sun to partial shade. -30 to -20 F
