Plant Name Description Annual
Growth
Ten Year Color Form Culture Hardiness
Thuja occidentalis
'Degroot's Spire'
This narrow columnar form of American arborvitae is unique both for its form and refined texture. It can be planted as a singular specimen or used in narrow situations where high screening is needed. A seedling selection from Sheridan Nursery, Ontario, Canada. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Golden Globe'
This plant has a soft golden-yellow color that blends well with other garden colors. Develops into a uniform, oval shape. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Yellow Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Tuffet' This pillow-shaped tuffet grows wider than tall, reminiscent of a mushroom cap. The golden-orange foliage has an unusual braided texture sure to invite closer inspection. Hardy, durable and adaptable to all soil types and full sun to part shade. 1-3" per year 1-3 ft Yellow Spreading Full sun -40 to -30F
Thuja occidentalis
'Hetz Midget'
The soft green foliage of 'Hetz Midget' grows in layered sprays. Slow-growing and compact in form. Originated from a seedling, raised by Frank R. Hetz around 1930; introduced in 1942. 3-5" per year. 3-4 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Hetz Wintergreen'
Very fast growing conical form of American arborvitae. As the name suggests this selection has an outstanding dark-green color year round, including winter, when most other selections of Thuja occidentalis are a dreary, brown-green. Useful planted either as a specimen conifer or where a tall screen or hedge is required. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Holmstrup'
The best feature of 'Holmstrup' is its excellent compact, dark-green foliage which holds color well in winter. It is of slower and slightly broader habit than the more common pyramidal or fastigiate hedging Thujas. A Danish selection introduced in 1951. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis 'Miky' The fine foliage of 'Miky' is at once delicate and tough-as-nails. A sport of highly regarded 'Smaragd,' this upright selection is shorter and stouter–more like a teardrop than a column–but with the same outstanding horticultural value. Single, grouped or lined up to make a compact hedge, plants stay low with little or no pruning. Foliage changes from pleasant green in summer to red brown in winter. Hardy, durable and adaptable to many conditions. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis Mr. Bowling Ball® ('Bobazam') This silvery-green, dwarf Arborvitae looks like an oversized bowling ball, except for its fine, almost lacy, texture. Actually, it is a reliable, mid-size, spherical bush that has many uses in the landscape. A Lake County Nursery 'Zam' introduction from Linesville, Pennsylvania, it is hardy, durable and adaptable to many conditions. 5-7" per year. 4-6 ft. Green Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Pendula'
The lacy foliage hangs gracefully, exposing the attractive, undulating branches reminiscent of a bygone era. Form depends on cultural care. Unstaked `Pendula' becomes a broad mound with outreaching branches, creating a unique evergreen wildlife sanctuary. Gentle moss-green color allows this plant to blend well into the landscape. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Pendulous Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Rushmore'
A compact narrow upright selection which maintains good green color in winter. A seedling selection grown by Norm Evers of South Dakota State University. Selected for tolerance to the extremely harsh winter weather conditions in South Dakota. Winter cold and wind tolerance significantly better than other upright selections. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Rheingold'
'Rheingold' is best known for its unusual, and therefore useful, coloring:  a strong, orange-yellow color that turns a deep, copper-orange hue in winter. Foliage is mostly soft, juvenile type, with scale-like foliage also present. Responds well to regular shearing. 3-6" per year. 3-5 ft. Yellow Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Sherwood Frost'
This slow growing, broad upright cultivar has foliage tips brushed a light creamy-white color. On a clear winter day the variegated foliage radiates as a sparkling beacon in the winter landscape. Best planted in full to partial sun. This hardy compact conifer is particularly useful as a color accent with other slow growing garden conifers. 3-6" per year. 4-5 ft. Green/
Yellow
Variegated
Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Smaragd'
This arborvitae cultivar from Denmark is obviously of superior ornamental value. Few plants become such popular `commodity' plants in such a short period of time. Deservedly popular because of the narrow, uniform habit and glossy green color in summer and winter. Also resistant to spider mites. 6-10" per year. 5-8 ft. Green Upright Narrow Full sun. -30 to -20 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Wareana Lutescens'
This old, nearly forgotten clone deserves to be rediscovered for today's contemporary landscapes. The mellow, creamy-yellow coloring offers the creative gardener an exciting, unique color choice for blending or contrasting with other plants. Effective with bold green, blue or gold conifers or as a backdrop for perennial borders. 6-10" per year. 6-8 ft. Yellow Upright Broad Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Woodwardii'
A globose or broadly rounded form that can be counted on to keep its rotund form without shearing. A reliable low hedge or boundary plant. The foliage of 'Woodwardii' blends well with the textures and colors of many flowers and foliage. 3-6" per year. 4-5 ft. Green Globose Full sun. -40 to -30 F
Thuja occidentalis
'Yellow Ribbon'
A distinctive narrow upright selection with golden-yellow foliage. This new Dutch selection is an improved golden form of American arborvitae. 12+" per year. 10+ ft. Yellow Upright Narrow Full sun. -40 to -30 F
