Plant Name Habit Zone Rate Color Description
Taxodium ascendens 'Prairie Sentinel' Upright Narrow 6 Large Green This vigorous, deciduous conifer has fine, bright-green spring foliage, which turns dramatic aged-copper/russet in fall. In winter, textured, bronzed-orange bark carries the show. Selected in the Midwest, the Pond Cypress cultivar is hardier and more narrow than the species, but appreciates plenty of moisture, as do others. Limited Availability
Taxodium distichum 'Cascade Falls'PP#12296 Weeping 6 Large Green This elegant, weeping Baldcypress offers fine foliage, great fall color and dramatic witner form. Its yellow-green spring foliage darkens to soft sage during summer and then mellows to warm brown and orange in fall. In winter, the deciduous conifer shows off gacefully weeping stems. Stake the young tree to any height, and it will arch over and sweep down with stunning effect. From Cedar Lodge Nursery in New Zealand, it makes a dynamic focal feature in full sun and is easy to prune to desired size. Known to thrive in wet conditions, it adapts to many conditions.
Taxodium distichum 'Cave Hill' Globe Shaped 5 Dwarf Green This classy, rounded ball of short, gnarly branches has been grafted onto a standard, where the delicate, feathery foliage can display its dramatic show of seasonal changes. Selected for winning color, slow growth and compact form, the small, deciduous tree is tough and adaptable to most soils, except alkaline. A witch's broom selection from Cave Hill Cemetery in Tennessee, the small, deciduous tree wants plenty of moisture and full sun. Limited Availability
Taxodium distichum 'Novum Pendulum' Upright Narrow 6 Large Green A strictly weeping, vigorous tree, this upright, narrow Baldcypress is a large tree with a small footprint. Stake young trees to a desirable height; then, enjoy year-round elegance and beauty that won't overwhelm a moderate site. Fine, yellow-green spring foliage softens to sage in summer and then takes on mellow shades of brown and orange before dropping to reveal a slim, trim winter form. Known to thrive in wet conditions, it adapts to many soils but needs full sun. Limited Availability
Taxodium distichum 'Peve Minaret' Upright Broad 5 Dwarf Green This naturally dwarf tree, selected in the Netherlands by Pete Vergeldt, is an introduction with immense horticultural value. The dense, compact spire has soft, rich-green foliage that begs to be touched. In autumn, the fine, almost feathery needles change to red-brown and hold for weeks. In winter, beautifully tiered branches that point up at the tips give the small tree added elegance and character. The deciduous conifer can be kept small and narrow with hard late-winter pruning, if desired. Widely adaptable for both northern cold and southern hot areas.
Taxodium distichum 'Peve Yellow' Upright Broad 5 Intermediate Yellow The delicate foliage of this mid-size Baldcypress is stunning soft-yellow in summer, changing to orange and red tones in fall. When very young, the tree's irregular branching suggests a gangly teenager, whose fast growth has outstripped his coordination. But it grows quickly past the awkward stage and matures into a lush, handsome tree with elegant, open branching. A striking, colorful accent in the garden, this Dutch selection provides year-round character, even in winter without needles.
Taxodium distichum 'Secrest' Spreading 5 Dwarf Green Low and slow-growing, this witch's broom discovery from Secrest Arboretum in Ohio, has attractive horizontal branching. The deciduous, spreading bun produces short, bright green shoots in late spring, maintains good green in summer and takes on a delightful fall gold. Bare, winter branches have a rustic, red-brown presence. Prefers a moist site, but quite adaptable if given full sun. Limited Availability
